Unfortunately, there is a lot of misleading information everywhere regarding heartburn home remedies and heartburn relief.

And if you want more details about Heartburn definition, causes, complication and management click here

1.      Lifestyle modifications for heartburn treatment.

Lifestyle modification is the first treatment option for heartburn treatment. And will protect you from serious complications later on.

1.1 Head of bed elevation (HOB):

head of bed elevation for heartburn treatment
In heartburn acid, food and liquids leak from the stomach radiating through the esophagus ( muscular tube between mouth and stomach) towards your throat and mouth. This is the simple reason behind heartburn.

So sleeping in this position elevating your trunk for at least 30 degrees invites gravity to play with you against heartburn. it helps in preventing that acid from escaping the stomach.

1.2  Stop night meals completely.

The night meal is disastrous in exaggerating heartburn symptoms. Don’t eat and go to bed immediately. leave at least two to three hours before sleeping after your last meal. To be able to manage this effectively you have to reschedule all your day.

Avoid fatty meal for heartburn treatment
1.3 Reduce your meal size.

Either it is your night meal or not you have to reduce your meal size. Don’t get too full with your meal. In the first days, that's won't be easy. after that, it will be your habit believe me.

1.4 Avoid fatty meals.

Fats take too much time indigestion. It stays too long in your stomachs so t h  probability of leakage and heartburn increases dramatically with fatty meals.

1.5 Control obesity.

According to the American college of gastroenterology, obesity is one of the leading causes of heartburn. Obesity increases pressure on the stomach thus causes acid leakage more frequently.

1.6 Don’t wear tight-fitting clothes.

Don’t wear any clothes that apply persistent pressure on your stomach. This will increase heartburn probabilities, frequency, and severity. If you are a fan of this type of clothing find another way to express yourself.

1.7 Quit smoking and alcohol.

First smoking: smoking cigarettes releases nicotine in your body. This Nicotine relaxes the gastroesophageal sphincter (Circular muscle between the stomach and the esophagus), And relaxing this sphincter is the main reason for heartburn and acid reflux.

Second Alcohol: To be scientific in dealing with alcohol consumption and heartburn, Alcohol consumption does cause heartburn but not to everyone. It triggers heartburn attacks in some patients so if you suffer heartburn quit alcohol as it may worsen your case.

2-Heartburn home remedies.

Here are very useful & easy heartburn  home remedies.

2.1 Baking soda.

Baking Soda neutralizes Stomach acid and calms heartburn. I guess you didn’t know that you have your remedy in the kitchen. So one teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water is very effective in managing heartburn attacks. This is very useful in case of night attacks and you don’t have heartburn nearby medication.

2.2 Ginger and heartburn.

Ginger heartburn home remedies

Ginger has been used for centuries as a folk medicine relieving gastrointestinal problems. Regarding heartburn, ginger is very effective in managing its symptoms. Ginger improves gastric (stomach) emptying, So decreases heartburn probabilities.

You can use ginger in any way you want.  Add diced or grated ginger to your favorite recipe, Drink hot ginger packets or roots. Regardless of heartburn, I am a ginger fan myself.

2.3 Licorice.

licorice roots is another folk remedy for heartburn but DON’T USE IT FREQUENTLY. It does relieve heartburn but don’t use it frequently.

Excess licorice consumption has many serious health complications begins with hypertension and ends with erectile dysfunction and heart failure. I was reluctant regarding mentioning licorice in this article, But I decided to mention its benefits which you will find anywhere, and also to warn you from excessive licorice consumption.

2.4 Chewing sugar-free gums.

Chewing gums is a good home remedy for heartburn. Chewing gums increases the swallowing rate and acid clearance from the esophagus. Remember that this acid causes painful erosion to the esophagus.

Why sugar-free?? You forgot what we said about obesity and heartburn!!!

2.5 Medications for heartburn.

Heartburn medications mainly block or neutralize stomach acids to relieve heartburn symptoms. Heartburn medications are divided into three main classes.

2.5.1  Direct antacids:

Works in the same way baking soda does. It directly neutralizes stomach acids causing immediate very short-term relief.

2.5.2  H2 blockers

Works by partial blocking of acid synthesis. So it controls heartburn symptoms. e.g. famotidine.

2.5.3 Proton pump inhibitors:

It blocks 100 % of stomach acids. It’s of the most advanced medications for relieving heartburn. But it has many precautions in the usage of course. e.g.  Omeprazole, Pantoprazole.
